“Isn't it too late?” — adults ask me this more often than they ask about the price. Short answer: no. People start learning guitar in their thirties, forties and fifties and end up playing the songs they love. Age only changes how it is worth learning.
Can you learn guitar at 40?
Yes. Playing guitar doesn't need a child's brain — it needs regular practice. An adult's hands learn new movements through repetition, just like touch typing or riding a bike. The first weeks are uncomfortable for your fingers at any age.
“If it weren't for Piotr, I would probably never have got anywhere with classical guitar. I was always held back by ‘I can't do it, it's not for me’ and similar excuses.”
And after 50?
Yes, too. After fifty you usually need more patience with your fingers and joints, but guitar doesn't demand strength or speed. It helps to have a guitar with lighter strings set low over the neck, shorter sessions (2 × 10 minutes instead of half an hour) and songs you know well by ear. Joint pain or numbness is a signal to stop, not to push through.
What adults do better
- You know what you want. You play for yourself, not because someone signed you up.
- You understand theory faster — scales and chord shapes connect quickly with what you hear.
- You choose the songs, so you practise music you actually want to play.
- You can plan — 15 minutes a day fits into even a busy schedule.
The usual obstacles
- Little time — so the practice plan has to be short and specific, not “practise as much as you can”.
- Perfectionism and embarrassment — in one-to-one lessons nobody is watching, you can make mistakes.
- Stiffer hands at first — a warm-up and a loose wrist solve most of it.
- A new city and a new language — if you've just moved to Warsaw, a weekly lesson is also a fixed point in the week that is just for you.
How to start: your first month
- A guitar that doesn't fight you. It needn't be expensive, but don't buy a toy — see buying your first guitar in Warsaw.
- 15 minutes a day, ideally at the same time — instead of an hour at the weekend.
- 3–5 basic chords and one song you really like as your goal for the month.
- A weekly lesson with a teacher who fixes your technique and plans around your schedule.
I compare lesson prices in Warsaw in how much guitar lessons cost. With me a lesson is a full hour (120 PLN), in English, next to Metro M2 Szwedzka.
